Employee left frustrated after receiving 'promotion': Boss says there will be no salary raise or job position change

In today’s job market, where employees are already dealing with layoffs, hiring freezes and heavier workloads, the idea of a promotion is usually seen as a win. It means growth, better pay and some recognition. But for one employee, what was announced as a promotion turned into a frustrating experience that has now sparked debate online.

The incident was shared on Reddit, where the employee described how the so-called promotion came with extra responsibilities but no salary hike and not even a new job title.

‘Promotion’ Announced Without Warning

According to the post, the announcement happened during a full team meeting. The employee said they were not informed beforehand. Management declared that they would be moving into a higher position, while someone from that higher role would shift down into their current job. Essentially, the two were switching responsibilities.

“Had a full team meeting where it was announced (I was not informed previously) that I am moving into a higher position and someone in the higher position is moving down into my position,” the employee wrote.

They further explained that they would now be training the other person on all the tasks they had been handling. At the same time, there was nothing new being passed on to them in terms of guidance or training. “So basically we are switching places and I am now training him on everything I was doing, he has nothing to train me on…I was told I was a better fit.”

The bigger shock came next. The company reportedly clarified that there would be no change in designation and no raise. The other employee would continue to keep the higher title. “I was told I will not be getting the higher job title, the other person is keeping their higher job title, and there is no raise,” the post said. “So basically I am getting more responsibilities without any benefits.”

Feeling Angry and Burnt Out

The employee did not hide their emotions. “I am completely pissed off and don’t know what to do in this situation,” they admitted. They also shared that they had liked their earlier role and manager, but already felt exhausted under the new arrangement.

When they discussed it with the new manager, they were told that a performance plan could be created and that maybe in the future the raise or title could happen. But the employee questioned this reasoning. “My new manager says we can put together a ‘performance plan’ to maybe get these things in the future but I feel I already earned it because they already gave it to me?! Any advice?”

Strong Reactions Online

The post drew sharp reactions. Many users said this was not a promotion at all. One commenter stated, “More responsibilities without more pay is not a promotion. Decline the ‘promotion’ in writing.” Another simply wrote, “decline the promotion in writing.”

Several others advised the employee to prepare to leave. “Time to start sending out resumes,” one user commented. Some suggested refusing to take on extra work without formal recognition. Others warned that agreeing to this setup could signal to management that the employee would accept more work without compensation.

There were also suspicions raised about the real motive behind the change. A few users suggested it might be a tactic to make the employee train someone else before being replaced.
