‘Will Tech Mahindra slash jobs?’ Know what the company says on viral claims

New Delhi: Tech Mahindra on Monday dismissed social media speculation about large-scale layoffs, stating that the company has no proposal under consideration to reduce its workforce.

In a regulatory filing, the IT services major said it had received queries and noticed several social media posts claiming the company was planning significant job cuts.

“The company has received calls and has noted certain social media posts regarding a market rumour of a potential significant reduction in headcount,” Tech Mahindra said in its filing.

The company clarified that the claims circulating online were unfounded.

“In view of the above speculation, the company on its own accord considers it necessary to clarify to the Stock Exchanges that no such proposal is under consideration and categorically denies any such market rumours,” it said, adding that the clarification was issued in compliance with disclosure norms.

The clarification comes after posts circulating on platforms such as X claimed that up to 30,000 employees could be affected by potential layoffs.

Tech Mahindra currently employs around 1,50,000 people globally and remains one of India’s major IT services providers.

The company recently announced a collaboration with Microsoft to launch an ontology-driven Agentic AI platform, aimed at accelerating data modernisation for telecom operators and enterprise clients.

In the previous quarter, the company had also clarified that mass layoffs were not being considered, though it is implementing productivity measures. These include shifting employees away from fixed-price projects and redeploying them into new assignments.

Industry analysts say artificial intelligence will reshape jobs across the technology sector rather than eliminate them entirely.

A recent report by Morgan Stanley suggested that the long-term impact of AI on employment may be less severe than widely feared. While certain roles could be automated, many employees are expected to transition into new kinds of jobs, including roles that do not yet exist.

However, the report noted that AI will significantly change the nature of work across industries.

Several technology leaders have also warned that a large portion of white-collar jobs relying heavily on computers could face automation within the next 12 to 18 months.

Meanwhile, some global technology companies have already announced workforce reductions as they invest heavily in AI infrastructure. Oracle is reportedly planning to cut 20,000 to 30,000 jobs as it expands its AI data-centre capacity, while Amazon recently announced plans to lay off around 16,000 employees as part of a broader AI restructuring strategy.
