Punctuality is a basic expectation in any workplace. Arriving on time ensures meetings run on schedule, reduces extra work for colleagues, and helps maintain overall productivity. But what happens when a long-serving employee, known for perfect attendance, is fired for a single, minor lapse?
A story recently shared on Reddit has drawn widespread attention after an employee, who had worked for over seven years without being late, was dismissed for being 20 minutes late, his very first delay. The incident has sparked a heated discussion about fairness, workplace rules, and the treatment of loyal staff.
According to the Reddit post, the event took place on a Tuesday, and the employee’s colleagues only learned about the dismissal a few days later. The user wrote, “This happened on Tuesday and today we just found out he was fired for being 20 minutes late for his first time ever.”
The post did not disclose the company’s location or the employee’s identity, but it quickly went viral, attracting hundreds of comments and sparking debates about how companies enforce rules.
The Reddit user further explained that in solidarity with their colleague, the team had planned a protest. The user added, “Next Monday me and all my coworkers will be late and will continue to come in late until they rehire him.”
Many online users expressed support. One said, “They were looking for a reason to fire. No company fires a good employee for being late 1 time.” Another added, “There’s gotta be more to this. They wanted him gone and this was a convenient way to fire him for cause.”
Some commenters cautioned that protesting could backfire, “When that happens, they are looking for a reason because they are not happy with them and didn’t have a single good reason. And protesting by whatever means your other coworkers take probably won’t work and will backfire…”
Others shared their personal experiences. One user wrote, “Yup happened to me several years ago. The one and only time I was fifteen minutes late in four years.” Another simply said, “That’s harsh! Toxic workplace for sure.”
