The ongoing Iran–Israel conflict in West Asia is now significantly impacting the IT sector. Rising tensions and deteriorating security conditions across Gulf countries have put over 10,000 Indian IT companies at risk, while more than 500,000 IT professionals face potential job losses.
Gulf IT Operations Disrupted
According to industry estimates, Indian IT firms have a strong presence in countries such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, and Oman. These companies operate across software development, support services, research and development, and IT operations. However, ongoing conflict has severely disrupted business activities in these regions.
If the crisis deepens, a large number of Indian IT professionals may be forced to return home. Estimates suggest that this figure could exceed 500,000, creating sudden pressure on India’s job market. Absorbing such a large workforce in a short time could prove to be a major challenge.
Echoes of 1990 Gulf War Crisis
Experts say the current situation resembles the 1990 Iraq–Kuwait war, when Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait forced nearly 100,000 Indian professionals to return home. At that time, reintegration and employment generation had emerged as serious challenges.
Gurugram Call Centers Hit Hard
The impact is also visible in Gurugram’s Cyber City, where around 250 call centers catering specifically to Gulf clients have been affected for several days. These centers employ thousands of workers, whose job security is now uncertain. However, call centers serving the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia remain largely unaffected for now.
Industry insiders indicate that Gulf governments have advised foreign companies to temporarily halt operations and move to safer locations due to security concerns. As a result, IT projects and service operations have been disrupted. If the situation does not stabilize soon, companies could face prolonged financial losses.
Industry-Wide Revenue Risks
The biggest concern is for Indian firms heavily dependent on Gulf markets. If the conflict escalates further, over 10,000 companies could face shutdown risks.
Experts warn that the crisis may not remain limited to individual companies but could also impact the overall growth of India’s IT sector. Large-scale project delays and contract disruptions may lead to revenue declines.
For now, all eyes remain on how the geopolitical situation unfolds. If ceasefire efforts fail or tensions continue, the impact could deepen further. Both companies and employees are navigating a period of uncertainty, with the future largely dependent on developments in the region.
