An unhappy worker recently shared his frustration on the popular Reddit community AntiWork subreddit, describing a painful experience with his employer after the death of his father. The employee explained that he had approached his manager hoping to receive a few days away from work so he could process his grief and handle personal matters related to the loss. Instead of receiving compassion or understanding, he claimed his request was turned down in a manner that felt dismissive and insensitive.

According to the post, the supervisor rejected the appeal for leave and responded with remarks that the employee perceived as cold and inappropriate. Rather than acknowledging the emotional burden of losing a parent, the manager reportedly joked about the heavy workload facing the team. The boss also advised the grieving employee to start exercising at a gym and handed him a card containing contact details for a professional grief counselor. The worker said the interaction left him feeling deeply upset and disillusioned about his work environment and life circumstances.

The story quickly attracted attention from members of the Reddit, many of whom expressed sympathy and shared their own difficult experiences dealing with workplace policies after the death of loved ones. Numerous commenters criticized companies that fail to offer compassionate bereavement policies and argued that organizations often prioritize productivity over employee well-being.

One commenter pointed out that if an employee were to die, most corporations would replace them almost immediately. The user suggested that unless the position was a dream career opportunity, the worker should seriously consider searching for a different job where management shows greater empathy toward staff.

Another contributor recounted a personal story about losing a sibling and feeling so frustrated by their employer’s response that they decided to stop making any effort that would financially benefit the company.

Several others discussed how their workplaces handle bereavement leave. One person described losing their mother and requesting a couple of days off simply to regain emotional stability. Their employer eventually granted paid bereavement leave but required formal proof of the death because of company policy.
