Hiring in the age of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly complex, with recruiters facing an overwhelming influx of low-effort applications generated using AI tools.
Raj Vikramaditya, founder of takeUforward, recently highlighted this growing concern, pointing to a noticeable decline in the quality of job applications despite a surge in volume. Sharing his observations, he noted that the issue is not limited to his organisation but reflects a broader hiring trend across industries.
According to him, while companies continue to receive a large number of applications, very few candidates manage to stand out. He described the current hiring landscape as filled with “noise,” where identifying genuinely capable talent is becoming increasingly difficult.
Vikramaditya cited a recent hiring experience at his company for a user experience (UX) role to illustrate the problem. After shortlisting candidates based on resumes, the evaluation stage revealed a concerning pattern. A majority of submissions appeared to be either copied or heavily assisted by AI, lacking originality, effort, or a clear understanding of the assignment.
He pointed out that even candidates who had progressed beyond the initial screening stage failed to demonstrate basic preparation. Many submissions, he said, showed minimal personal input or research, raising questions about the authenticity of the work presented.
Out of 35 shortlisted candidates, only one submission reflected genuine effort and originality. That candidate ultimately secured the role, while the rest failed to meet expectations.
The incident underscores a larger challenge emerging in recruitment—while AI has made it easier for candidates to apply for jobs, it has also made it significantly harder for employers to distinguish between automated responses and real capability.
