'My first layoff was the best thing for my career': Story of IT sector employee, who suffered two layoffs, will inspire you

Amid ongoing restructuring across the tech industry, including periodic layoffs at Oracle, conversations around job security and career resilience have once again come into focus. While such developments may feel unsettling, stories of professionals navigating similar setbacks in the past continue to offer perspective. One such story is that of a UX design leader, whose 2023 post about surviving layoffs and rebuilding her career has resurfaced as a reminder of how setbacks can lead to unexpected growth.

From layoff shock to career clarity

The professional revealed that her layoff at Meta was not her first. Nearly nine years earlier, she had experienced a similar situation at Cisco, where a large portion of her team was let go. At the time, she had spent over a decade working on the same products and had begun to feel professionally stuck. When the layoff finally happened, she initially felt a sense of relief, seeing it as an opportunity for change.

However, that feeling was short-lived. It soon gave way to self-doubt and guilt, as the content design lead began questioning her abilities despite a strong track record. Like many professionals, she felt an urgent need to secure another role quickly and managed to land a job within three weeks. But the decision proved to be hasty. Within days, she realised the role did not align with her passion for UX writing and product thinking. Trusting her instincts, she made the bold choice to quit within a week.

Turning setbacks into long-term career growth

That turning point helped the design industry professional gain clarity about what she truly wanted. By tapping into her professional network, she found an opportunity in UX writing that better matched her skills and interests. Over time, she went on to build and lead content design teams across organisations, eventually establishing herself as a leader in the field.

Reflecting on her journey, the UX writing expert emphasised that layoffs are often business decisions rather than reflections of individual capability. She noted that rushing into the next opportunity out of fear can lead to missteps, and instead highlighted the importance of pausing to reassess one’s goals.

Today, her perspective on layoffs has evolved. While acknowledging the emotional toll, she views such moments as opportunities to reset and grow. Her story, now resurfacing amid fresh waves of layoffs, serves as a reminder that while job loss can feel deeply personal, it can also pave the way for more meaningful and aligned career paths.
