As India prepares for major workforce shifts driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), a new global study has found that nearly one in three jobs could see more than 50 per cent of their tasks augmented by Generative AI, pointing to a structural transformation in how work is performed.
With businesses increasingly adopting AI tools, the report highlights the need for urgent reskilling, workforce planning and curriculum redesign. India’s education and employment sectors may need to prepare for changing skill requirements in information technology, services, finance, manufacturing and knowledge industries. The study also called for balanced and responsible AI deployment supported by governance frameworks that protect workforce interests while encouraging innovation.
While the research focused on labour market trends in Minnesota, United States, experts said the findings are highly relevant to India’s large and fast-changing employment landscape, where similar AI-led changes are expected across sectors in the coming years.
The study was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University of St Thomas, Minnesota, and North Star Policy Action. The AI Research Centre at Woxsen University contributed to the research and helped develop a GenAI Job Intelligence Dashboard.
Researchers said the findings reinforce that AI exposure should not be viewed only as job displacement. Instead, the larger shift is expected in task redesign, workflow automation and creation of new job categories.
