Most farewell emails follow a familiar pattern, with polite words, thanks, and a formal sign-off. But what if there were no words at all, only memes?
That is exactly what happened in a Bengaluru office, where one employee turned his last working day into a light moment for the entire team. His meme-only farewell email, shared by Bhavisha Bhatia on Instagram, has now gone viral.
Instead of writing a formal message, the employee opened his email with a meme that read, “Brace yourself, a farewell email is coming.” From there, the entire message unfolded through humour. One meme read, “Well, I’m not usually one for speeches so memes,” setting the tone clearly.
Another showed the effort behind the idea, “Me googling ‘work memes’ for my farewell email,” paired with a cartoon of Spider-Man sitting at a computer. The email ended with a familiar line used in a light tone, “Acha bhai, ab chalta hoon (Okay then, I’ll take my leave now),” giving it a simple sign-off.
At first, even his colleagues were unsure how to react. “I couldn’t process for two minutes if this was real,” Bhatia said. But once the surprise settled, the replies began, and they followed the same tone.
Instead of formal responses, the team joined in with jokes and memes. One colleague wrote, “Brother, do write letters and stuff,” while another used a popular line from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, saying, “Ja Simran Ja, (Go Simran, go)!”
The exchange grew more playful as it continued. Bhatia also pointed out that one colleague removed the manager from the CC list and sent a meme asking the employee to take everyone along.
Online, people quickly connected with the moment. Many shared their own stories of informal farewells and workplace humour. One user said, “I like this type of work culture.” Another wrote, “I put the ‘this is my code, it’s your problem now’ meme in the handover document I prepared when I left my last job.”
Some simply enjoyed the humour, commenting, “This one hilarious.” Others saw it as inspiration, with remarks like, “Hahah.. I’m gonna take inspiration for my farewell.” and “Okay I know how my farewell mail will look like.”
