RPG Group asks employees to work from home, cut travel amid PM Modi's austerity push

Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity and responsible spending, RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka has issued a note asking group companies to cut discretionary spending, reduce travel, promote work-from-home, and accelerate the transition to electric vehicles.

In the communication addressed to senior leaders, Goenka said, “As you are aware, the Hon. Prime Minister has called for a renewed national focus on austerity and responsible resource utilisation.”

Calling on group companies to lead by example, he added, “As a Group, it is important that we demonstrate leadership by embracing these measures wholeheartedly and setting the right example for our teams.”

In a note posted by Goenka on X, the group asked that “All employees who can work from home should be actively encouraged to do so.”

On travel, the note stated that “Foreign Travel: To be curtailed to the absolute minimum,” while “Domestic Air Travel: Should be significantly reduced.” It also directed teams to “Avoid or minimise any meetings that require intercity travel.”

The group has also asked businesses to speed up cleaner mobility adoption, stating, “All future company-owned or site-leased cars should be encouraged to be electric or hybrid vehicles. Please accelerate the shift where pending.”

The note further emphasised virtual meetings and sustainable commuting, asking employees to use carpooling or public transport wherever possible.

“These steps are essential not only to support the national agenda but also to strengthen our internal culture of responsibility, agility, and cost-consciousness,” Goenka said in the note.
