Bihar to Track Job Outcomes from Employment Fairs Amid Complaints of Salary Cuts and Contract Changes

The Bihar Labour Resources Department is set to create a comprehensive digital database tracking individuals who secured jobs through state-run employment and job fairs. The move follows a surge in complaints alleging salary reductions, altered working conditions, and broken promises by employers.

The database will be updated regularly to monitor how long employees remain in their roles, the reasons for leaving, and whether companies are honouring their original commitments. Officials will make random calls to workers to verify employment status, probe allegations of exploitation, and confirm if salaries match the amounts promised at the time of hiring. They will also check if employers have sought any additional payments from staff.

According to state data, more than 1.28 lakh companies are currently registered on the National Career Service (NCS) portal to offer jobs in Bihar, a dramatic increase from just two registrations in 2015–16. The figures have climbed steadily, with major surges in 2022–23 (39,599 companies) and 2023–24 (68,154). In the current financial year, registrations include 5,405 in April, 6,699 in May, and 6,190 in June.

Nationally, over 2.95 crore companies have signed up on the NCS portal, with Maharashtra leading at 5.26 lakh registrations, followed by Gujarat (1.72 lakh), Karnataka (1.58 lakh), and Madhya Pradesh (1.52 lakh).
