Fresh data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has highlighted a persistent diversity gap in central government staffing, with women accounting for fewer than one in five employees. The figures underscore the scale of the challenge India faces in advancing gender inclusion within public sector employment.
Despite policy pushes and diversity mandates, female representation has remained stagnant across ministries and departments. Analysts note that this shortfall reflects wider socio-economic barriers such as workplace biases, limited leadership pipelines, and inadequate support systems for women professionals.
Experts suggest that stronger interventions — including career-return programmes, leadership development tracks for women, and family-friendly workplace policies — are critical if government institutions are to make meaningful progress on DEI commitments.
