Citigroup has made artificial intelligence (AI) training compulsory for the majority of its global workforce, highlighting the increasing role of prompting skills in the banking sector. The programme covers 1.75 lakh employees across 80 locations, out of the company’s total headcount of around 2.29 lakh
The training is designed to improve how employees interact with AI tools by teaching them to craft effective prompts. The modules use adaptive learning technology that adjusts to an individual’s skill level, with beginners requiring more time to complete the course and advanced users able to finish quickly.
Citi has already reported significant employee engagement with AI this year, with millions of prompts entered into its internal platforms. The bank has described AI as an important enabler, helping staff complete tasks in minutes that previously took hours.
The mandatory course is part of a continuous upskilling process, with further training modules planned to deepen employees’ understanding of AI and its applications.
The decision reflects a broader trend across the financial sector, where institutions are investing heavily in AI literacy. For instance, JPMorgan has introduced AI training as part of new employee onboarding, while Bank of America has rolled out both voluntary and mandatory training modules across its workforce. Wells Fargo has partnered with universities for large-scale employee education.
These programmes aim to build AI capabilities across all levels of the workforce rather than limit them to specialist teams. As financial institutions deploy AI tools in areas such as client servicing, risk management, and operations, training is being positioned as critical to ensure responsible and effective use.
