There’s a difference between using AI as a tool and treating it like a religion. One manager learned this the hard way, and it cost him nothing but his dignity at a biweekly scrum.
One story that’s been circulating on Reddit has struck a chord with workers across the country. One IT employee was so fed up with his manager’s obsessive AI mandate that he used the very tool being forced on him to automate his entire mandatory HIPAA compliance training. Video watching, quiz answering, certification all done by an AI agent, while he sat back and watched.
When the manager asked the team how they had been “getting creative” with AI outside of coding, the employee explained what he did. The room exploded. The manager paused and had to admit, in front of his whole team, that there are some things he doesn’t actually want AI doing. After all, the mandate he’d been working towards for months was limited. He just needed his own employee to find it for him.
The mandate that broke the team
According to the Reddit post, the manager’s rule wasn’t simply “try AI when it helps.” It was absolute: “Even if it’s faster to do it manually than with Claude, get Claude to do it.” Zero exemptions, zero pushback, zero rationality.
The team was already down and quietly checking out. The manager seemed to have no idea why.
This dissonance between leadership enthusiasm and employee reality is more common than most companies want to admit. According to Upwork Research Institute, 96% of C-suite leaders expect AI to increase productivity for their employees, but 77% of employees say that AI tools have increased their workload. And this story so perfectly illustrates that gap between expectation at the top and experience on the ground.
“AI brain fry” is a real thing
What the manager missed, and what this story quietly hints at, is that forcing AI into every corner of someone’s workday doesn’t make them more productive. It wears them out more.
A study of 1,488 full-time US workers published in the Harvard Business Review found that some employees are experiencing what researchers call “AI brain fry,” mental fatigue from using or managing AI tools beyond a person’s cognitive capacity. Workers who were required to closely monitor AI systems showed a 14% increase in mental effort at work and reported 12% more mental fatigue.
In this story, this employee was not lazy or unproductive. He was a smart IT guy being told to add unnecessary steps to his workflow every day. That kind of innovation-adjacent, top-down micromanagement is a fast track to exactly the kind of quiet quitting the Reddit post describes.
The HIPAA loophole nobody saw coming
This is how the malicious compliance actually worked. The employee code used Puppeteer, a popular framework that allows code to interact with websites like a human would: clicking, navigating, filling out forms. He pointed it to the HIPAA training site, logged in, and let the AI agent take over: watch the videos, go through the modules, and ace the final quiz.
He obeyed the manager’s instructions and used AI for a non-coding application. He became creative. He just so happened to use it in a way that made the mandate seem ridiculous because it was.
And for the curious: the AI didn’t really “watch” the videos in any meaningful sense. It clicked through the course like a human user would, clicking play, waiting out timers, going to the next module, without really absorbing any of the content. Which, ironically, raises a fair question of how much anyone remembers from mandatory compliance videos anyway.
The moment it all broke down
During the biweekly scrum, the manager went around the room asking how the team had innovated with AI. The employee calmly explained that he had it complete his compliance certification. The others on the team cracked up. The manager had no good response.
The kicker? The training platform charges per seat. The manager could not afford to force a redo and publicize the fact that his own mandate had backfired. So the employee is certified for another year and actively job hunting, hoping to find somewhere better before the next recertification comes around.
One commenter pointed out that the move was perfectly fine just because it was an internal compliance course, not a professional certification with serious legal consequences attached to it.
What this story really teaches us
But beyond the laughs is a story of what happens when leadership cares more about the optics of innovation than the reality of how work really gets done. AI is really useful. It can save time, reduce repetitive work, and help people focus on what matters. But when it is used as a blunt instrument, forced into every job, whether or not it fits, it ceases to be a tool and becomes a burden
No software can fix a management problem, and no mandate can substitute for trust.
