Layoffs 2025: After weeks of speculations online, particularly on LinkedIn and Reddit, about incoming layoffs at Oracle, the Texas-based tech company, the “pink slips” were finally “handed” to the employees. TOI reported the news after speaking to the affected employees who were laid off over a Zoom call.
The outlet reported that the layoff announcements were under the guise of “project updates”, and as a result, the employees have been becoming growingly anxious each time they receive an email with this subject line. The company has a strength of 30,000 people who have been working in constant fear that they could be the next.
‘Over in less than 20 minutes’
“Jobs as we know them just don’t exist anymore,” said an affected employee working in the database team.
The employee added, “It was all over in less than 20 minutes – a Zoom invite, the manager on the call, and the HR representative telling me it wasn’t about my performance but purely business reasons,” the affected employee further said, before adding, “My access was revoked very quickly. My RSUs were due to vest in Feb, but now I’ll lose them.”
Hardest part is to tell parents
Another laid-off employee said that his parents are dependent on him. “My parents depend on me, and telling them was the hardest part,” he said.
‘Layoffs happened under the guise of a business update’
A third person, who was also laid off on a call that was in place to discuss a “business update”, said he is still in shock.
“I’ve signed up for outplacement services. But it will take some time. The HR only outlined the severance we would receive. The entire process felt cold and came as a complete shock,” he revealed.
Layoffs in cloud business
The report by TOI stated that Oracle is laying off employees in its cloud unit, which will impact teams both in India and the US, according to a report by Data Centre Dynamics. The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) division, where the layoffs are happening, includes engineering, data centre operations, and AI/ML functions.
There have been reports that nearly 10% of Oracle’s workforce in India has been affected as part of these layoffs. Some employees claim that over 3,000 people have been affected. The company hired as many as 40,000 people in India in 2017.
Last month, Oracle reportedly laid off some 10% of its Indian workforce, citing “restructuring” as the official reason. As part of the decision, the software development, cloud services and technical support verticals are the hardest hit, per reports.
