Meta fires employees over misuse of meal credits; sparks debate internally

Meta has terminated around two dozen employees for allegedly misusing its daily meal credit perk, according to reports. The move has triggered mixed reactions among staff, with some defending the firings as justified while others argue the company acted too harshly.

The perk in question, known internally as the Grubhub meal benefit, provides employees with $25 in daily credits. It is primarily intended for staff working late hours or in locations without on-site cafeterias. However, according to Business Insider, an internal review found that some workers used the credits to buy non-food items such as laundry detergent and kitchenware.

Meta reportedly drew a distinction between occasional violations and repeated misuse. Those who were found to have breached the rules multiple times lost their jobs, while employees with isolated violations received warnings.

The firings quickly became a hot topic on Blind, an anonymous workplace discussion forum that requires company email verification. Employees debated whether Meta’s decision was proportionate. Some argued that strict enforcement was necessary, pointing out that the rules were clear. Others expressed concern that minor mistakes could now carry disproportionate consequences.

Several employees described receiving warning emails after using their credits for colleagues or applying them outside the policy. Some commenters suggested Meta could have issued refunds or temporary suspensions rather than outright dismissals.

The incident comes amid Meta’s broader “year of efficiency” push, under which the company has trimmed staff and tightened internal policies. The response to the meal credit misuse highlights the growing scrutiny employees face, as Meta seeks to project greater discipline and cost control across its global workforce.
