Microsoft cuts hundreds of jobs in another round of layoffs

Microsoft is making another round of job cuts, just weeks after reducing nearly 3% of its global workforce, in a move that underscores the tech giant’s continued efforts to streamline operations.

According to a filing with Washington state’s Employment Security Department, 305 additional employees in Redmond are being let go. This brings the total number of layoffs in Microsoft’s home state to nearly 2,300 in recent weeks.

According to a report by Geekwire, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that these layoffs are separate from the company’s earlier round, which impacted about 6,000 employees worldwide. The latest cuts, however, represent “significantly less than 1%” of Microsoft’s total global headcount.

In a statement, the company said it is “implementing organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.” It emphasised that while AI was not directly cited as the cause, Microsoft continues to use technology to help employees focus on “the most meaningful and important tasks.”

The restructuring appears focused on removing layers of management and eliminating overlapping roles, as Microsoft looks to increase operational efficiency. The company stressed that such changes are not new and have historically been part of its approach to evolving with business needs.

While Microsoft hasn’t detailed which departments are affected in the latest round, the message is clear: the company is recalibrating to stay competitive — and leaner — in a rapidly changing tech landscape.
