Odisha’s industrial landscape received a major boost on Thursday as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated Tata Steel’s Rs 47,599 crore expansion project in Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district. Notably, this project alone is expected to generate 4,625 jobs.
The 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant expansion came amid a broader wave of 24 industrial projects worth Rs 1.15 lakh crore, collectively set to generate 36,000 jobs across the state.
Steel Giant’s Expansion Anchors Growth
The newly inaugurated Tata Steel facility in Kalinga Nagar marks India’s largest blast furnace with an inner volume of 5,870 cubic meters.
The expansion elevates the plant’s capacity from 3 MTPA to 8 MTPA, positioning it as a critical hub for producing advanced high-strength steel used in automotive, infrastructure, power, and defence sectors.
With this project, Tata Steel’s total national capacity now stands at 26.1 million tonnes, cementing Odisha as its prime investment destination.
It is worth noting that the company has invested over Rs 1 lakh crore in the state over the past decade, operating key facilities in Meramandali, Jamshedpur, and Gamharia. The Kalinga Nagar expansion alone will create direct jobs, accelerating local economic growth and technological advancement.
While specific details have yet to be declared, expected jobs include the roles of Production Supervisor, Safety Manager, Logistics Manager, Site Safety Supervisor, Structure Engineer, and Operation/Maintenance/Service Assistant, supporting the manufacturing, infrastructure, and supply chain operations within the steel plant.
Diverse Industrial Push Across Sectors
Alongside Tata Steel’s project, 23 other ventures were launched or initiated, spanning steel, renewable energy, chemicals, and food processing. The projects are strategically spread across Jajpur’s Kalinga Nagar, Danagadi, and Badachana regions, highlighting the district’s role as Odisha’s industrial backbone.
