Terrifying job application goes viral as it gives new meaning to the weekly ‘grind’

When applying to jobs, candidates typically find the job descriptions to encompass the usual elements: the role description, company mission, 40-hour work week, and salary range.

However, not all jobs are that straightforward. One job description went viral on Reddit for demanding a seven-day work week, which is certainly not something you see every day.

Besides the expectation of going into the office every day of your life moving forward, the actual descriptions of the job requirements are what sent people over the edge about this role.

In the Recruiting Hell subreddit, the original poster (OP) said, “I really have no words,” about a founding engineer role at an AI advertisement company. He added screenshots of the job to the post.

“Although they have the same requirements for every opening. I did apply since I was desperate for job but anyway,” the OP wrote. “I found a job a month back but this one job description kept bugging me and thankfully I found this subreddit.”

The viral job description

The job application stated, “Please understand and agree with our values before applying,” followed by a detailed list of what they’re looking for.

First on the list was the bullet point people were most outraged by: “7-day work week. We will not be outworked. That being said, weekends are more flexible (OK to grab a brunch or dinner).

Another interesting bullet point was: “Drive. You’re hungry to do what it takes for us to win. You likely have a massive chip on your shoulder and/or a neurodivergent brain…”

While many job descriptions want candidates who are driven and passionate for their career field, this role is looking for very specific qualities, like the “chip on your shoulder” aspect.

Many of us have probably never heard that one before.

A theme with this job description is the work-life balance, or seemingly lack thereof.

Another requirement is “Grind. We work/text on weekends and at night. It’s ok to send messages at 3am.”

This means that when you’re logging off for the day, you never really log off from work, and it follows you home.

This company also knows what they’re looking for and isn’t afraid of firing people if they don’t fit the bill right off the bat.

“If someone isn’t an A player, we part ways quickly. Please be okay with this. We do paid trials to help derisk this,” the description stated.

People’s reactions to the job description

Many comments reflect a similar sentiment that this is a job they would never want to apply for because of the lack of work-life balance.

“This is the type of job that causes burnout in less than six months,” one user commented.

Another user replied, “I’m burned out just reading it.”

“Seriously though, how late are they usually working on weekends that they have to say grabbing dinner is ok??” another person commented.

Someone else wrote, “Big of them, to allow you to eat on weekends?”
