Not everyone who is returning to their motherland after living in foreign nations is happy about the decision. Some are simply failing to adjust to the lifestyle changes. This software engineer is seemingly one of the said lot, as he shared about his ‘biggest mistake’ in life on social media; moving back to India from the US. Taking to Reddit, the man shared about his past years, which were much better than his current situation. As per the post, the man did his Master’s from the US, and then worked in America for 4 years- until his H1B visa ‘luck’ ran out. The man eventually came back to India after resigning from his US company in 2022. However, 3.5 years later, the man is still regretting the shift.
As per the post, he used to earn ‘8 times more’ than what he earns in India, for the same position that he was managing in the US. His savings also ended up taking a huge hit, as now– his salary is comparatively much less. He also chimed in on factors like better work-life balance, cleaner air, and infrastructure in the US, which he now misses after moving back to India.
The post, soon after getting shared, went viral and left netizens reacting. Most found the man’s concerns ‘relatable’, while the rest advised him to keep looking for more ‘outside India opportunities’.

“Moving back to India from the US was my biggest mistake,” the post read.
“I did my Masters from the USA and worked there for 4 years before my luck ran out in the H1B lottery and I had to resign and come back in 2022. It’s been downhill from there. I work as a software engineer and I was earning 8 times more in the USA than here. My monthly savings there were more than my yearly savings here,” the post further read.
“Also cant ignore other factors such as good work life balance, Clean air and great infra there compared to here. I am literally slogging for peanuts here and my masters degree and US work ex is also not helping me to get a good package as companies here don’t care about it at all. Not sure how to get out of this now,” the post concluded.
The post was shared on Reddit, by the handle ‘That-Replacement-232’. The post was shared today and pulled many reactions.
Internet’s reaction:
“If your visa ran out, how was this a ‘mistake’? There was no choice right?” a user said. “Try to get a job in a company which might sponsor your H1 / L1 later if you want to go back,” added a second person.
“Imagine instead of software, being a Mechanical Engineer with 3+ yrs work exp in Silicon Valley. There is literally no scope here for new product development, so my skills are mostly useless. Also pay is pathetic to say the least. I had to move back 3 months ago due to not getting a job after being laid off. I do have H1B tho, so there is some hope of going back,” recalled another.
“So what do the companies in India want? You said US Masters or US work ex etc don’t matter,” added a fourth user. “Why not move to the same company in India if it was big enough and paying so much?” asked the next.
