Boreout, a condition marked by chronic workplace boredom and disengagement, is gaining visibility as organizations evaluate how employee motivation affects performance. Unlike burnout, which is driven by excessive workload and stress, boreout stems from a lack of meaningful tasks, limited challenges, and environments that fail to stimulate employees. The result is psychological detachment that can erode productivity across industries.
In Mexico, only 54% of workers report being satisfied with their jobs, suggesting that nearly half of the workforce begins each day without motivation to go to work, reports Wellhub. Although six out of 10 people resign due to salary-related issues, in Mexico there are additional factors driving voluntary turnover, including monotony and a lack of challenges, says the company.
“Apart from salary and compensations, employees need a comprehensive well-being-oriented environment to refrain the talent from isolating mentally,” says Arturo Cororminas, Director of Learning and Transformation, L’Oréal, to MBN
His view reflects broader concerns about boreout, which is often described as the counterpart to burnout, driven not by overload but by a persistent lack of stimulation. Boreout can develop in various settings, from highly standardized offices to roles where employees feel under-challenged for extended periods. Its main causes include monotonous tasks, unchallenging work, overqualification for a role, limited responsibility, and the underutilization of skills, all of which contribute to disengagement and a sense of stagnation in the workplace, reports Hays.
Research indicates that this type of chronic boredom can contribute to errors, lower productivity, and adverse outcomes for consumers and organizations. Workers experiencing boreout may feel either overworked or underutilized, leading to distraction, stress, and disillusionment. The condition is also associated with depression, anxiety, impulsivity, substance use, and higher risk-taking behavior.
“Boredom can lower your motivation and negatively affect your satisfaction with your job,” says Indeed.
Studies from the University of Notre Dame suggest that suppressing boredom may intensify its effects. Alternating between routine and meaningful tasks can help prevent negative spillovers that affect overall performance. This approach aligns with the concept of job crafting, a practice seeking to strengthen employee engagement.
Job crafting involves adjusting tasks, relationships, or perceptions around work. Task crafting focuses on modifying the type or sequence of assigned activities. Relational crafting centers on building connections at work, such as mentoring colleagues or collaborating across teams. Cognitive crafting prompts employees to reframe their roles to identify purpose, such as viewing customer service as an opportunity to assist people rather than merely resolve issues.
Job crafting offers employees a path to transform their work experience. This transformation is crucial, as when employees feel valued and committed, their motivation tends to increase. “Humans are instinctively driven by purpose. When purpose is tied to a task, employees will be more motivated to accomplish the task because they can see how it fits into a bigger picture,” says the Harvard Division of Continuing Education.
Maintaining motivation at work boosts productivity and job performance, improves mental health by helping workers manage stress, and increases overall job satisfaction, according to Calm. Motivation also contributes to a positive workplace atmosphere, often encouraging others to stay engaged. Over time, motivated employees are more likely to build new skills, take on challenges and advance in their careers, making motivation a key factor in long-term development.
“Every organization faces, sooner or later, the challenge of having employees, even leaders, who are not aligned with the common purpose,” writes Javier Torre, Managing Director Mexico and Central America, PageGroup, on Mexico Business News. “When a company and its employees are moving in the same direction, the collective effort multiplies,” he adds.
