In an elaborate Reddit post, he claimed that while his business venture is profitable, offering stability, he misses the privilege of being in the presence of professional colleagues and the structured environment of corporate life.
In the write-up, the employee revealed that he left this corporate job a year ago despite earning about Rs 1 lakh per month to start his own business. Although the new venture generates approximately Rs 2 lakhs in revenue per month, the reality is quite different. Since he operates a hardware firm, he has to deal with all kinds of people in his daily life, including labourers, transporters, suppliers, customers, middlemen and local agents, where most of the interactions are often informal and unsatisfactory.
Structured corporate life versus chaotic small business
Explaining further, the founder revealed that over time, he realised that he enjoys being surrounded by intellectual individuals, featuring structured discussions, clear communication, and a professional environment. But in most small businesses, especially traditional ones, such environments are rare. Aggressive negotiations, chasing payments, managing conflicts and dealing with unpredictable behaviour often lead to mental exhaustion, which, according to him, is worse than corporate pressure.
On the contrary, the corporate culture allows you to work with a professional team and educated colleagues in structured systems, which have clear roles, and good conduct, an ambience which he said was mentally stimulating and much more comfortable. This comparison made him realise that business might not suit someone who values professionalism and well-educated peers, like consulting, finance, analytics and tech. For those involved in traditional firms like transport,m scrap and hardware, the temperament needs to be completely opposite even if the business makes good money.
In conclusion, the hardware owner opined that sometimes a job can actually provide a better quality of life. It all depends on the kind of person you are.
