A career coach took to X and shared an account of a coworker who was reportedly fired after what many in the team felt was an unfair escalation of a routine situation.
According to the post, the employee had built a strong reputation at work. She was consistently among the top performers, regularly met her targets, supported colleagues when they were under pressure, and maintained a steady, drama-free presence in the team. By all internal measures, she was considered reliable and committed.
The situation began when she applied for paid time off for her sister’s wedding. She submitted the request with three weeks’ notice, well within the company’s process. The leave was formally approved through the system, giving her confidence to make personal arrangements. She went ahead and booked her travel and accommodation, both of which were non-refundable.
However, just two days before her planned departure, she was contacted by her manager. The message conveyed urgency around an upcoming client presentation, with a request to reconsider her travel plans. The manager asked if she could postpone her trip, framing it as a need for greater flexibility in the moment. The manager further asked her to be “a team player”.
The employee declined, explaining that the trip was for a family wedding and that all arrangements had already been made. She also pointed out that her leave had been approved in advance and followed standard procedure. Despite this, the conversation ended without resolution.
What happened after she returned from her leave
When she returned from her leave, the situation escalated quickly. Her system access was revoked, and by the afternoon, she was contacted by HR. She was informed that her employment was being terminated, with the stated reason being lack of commitment.
