A software development engineer (SDE) employed at a ‘massive’ multinational company (MNC) has sought the internet’s help after revealing that they only watched reels and YouTube videos as they did not have any meaningful work to do in the office. Having graduated from an IIT, the techie said they had a paycheck that looked good on paper, but the lack of any tech-related work had made them feel stuck and bored.
“I haven’t been given any serious work. Initially, I was put on a random GenAI project that ended up being scrapped. After speaking with my manager, I was moved to a standard maintenance-heavy team, only to realise there is almost zero actual development involved,” the techie wrote in a Reddit post.
“My typical day: Reach the office, sit at my desk, check messages and emails, then just kill time watching reels or YouTube lectures until it’s time to head home. I am bored out of my mind,” the techie said.
The software engineer highlighted that the team culture was ‘draining’ with the seniors not interested in anything beyond their own bubbles. The techie said they thought of upskilling and joining a startup, but the state of the current job market made them stay at the company.
“I’ve also started feeling like the role of a junior dev has fundamentally shifted because of AI. The small tasks that used to be “learning opportunities” for freshers are now being handled by AI in seconds. Is this the new reality?”

As the post went viral, a section of social media users advised the techie to utilise the time to upskill, while others told them to look for another job before they get stuck in a rut.
“That sounds like a dream job. You can use the time to work on your side project,” said one user, while another added: “Upskill and prepare your emergency fund, some investments etc on the side.”
A third commented: “Don’t listen to these people saying it’s their dream company. I am in a similar situation. Four years later you will realise that you have no skills and it will get near impossible to switch companies. Switch now asap.”
