A jobseeker was left devastated after discovering that emails from his dream company had been quietly piling up in his spam folder, including four interview invitations he never saw until it was too late.
The candidate shared his experience in a post on Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace forum titled, “Spam filtering costed me a job opportunity at my dream company,” explaining how a routine check of his spam folder led to a painful discovery.
The 27-year-old, who works in a BPO handling medical device post-market surveillance, said he had been actively searching for better opportunities after spending nearly three years in his current role. Among the companies he applied to was Stryker, a major medical technology firm that he described as the “FAANG of medical devices” within his field.
According to the candidate, the role seemed tailor-made for his experience, making it one of the opportunities he wanted most. To his surprise, his application was shortlisted, and the company reached out with instructions to schedule an interview.
The problem? He never saw the emails.
The candidate explained that every message related to the interview process, including four follow-up emails from the recruiter, had been automatically filtered into his spam folder. By the time he stumbled upon them, the interview was supposed to have been scheduled two days earlier.
“I got to know about it when I was going through my spam folder today,” he wrote, adding that the missed opportunity hit him particularly hard because suitable openings in his niche industry are rare.
Feeling that he had let a major career opportunity slip through his fingers, he admitted the experience left him overwhelmed.
“This was THE OPPORTUNITY to me and I lost it completely. I just went into the bathroom and cried,” he wrote.
The post quickly drew attention from fellow professionals, many of whom shared stories of their own missed opportunities and urged him not to lose hope.
Some commenters recalled facing similar disappointments in the past, saying that opportunities that initially seemed life-changing sometimes turned out to be blessings in disguise.
Others pointed out that jobseekers should make a habit of checking spam and junk folders regularly, especially when actively interviewing, as important recruiter emails can occasionally get filtered out without warning.
Several users also encouraged him to keep applying and stay optimistic, arguing that a single missed interview does not define an entire career journey and that persistence often pays off in unexpected ways.
However, the story took a positive turn shortly after.
In an update to the post, the candidate revealed that the scheduling bot linked in the email was still functional. After exploring the options, he was able to access a fresh set of interview slots for the following week and successfully book a new date.
“The bot was actually useful!” he wrote. “It sent me some rescheduled dates for the upcoming week and I selected one of them and got the meeting invite.”
With the interview now back on the calendar, the candidate said his focus had shifted from disappointment to preparation.
