Manager denies work-from-home request despite heavy rain and flooding. Employee’s smart protest turns the tables

In today’s evolving workplace culture, work-life balanceemployee well-beingflexible work arrangements, and compassionate leadership have become more important than ever. Extreme weather conditions, daily commuting struggles, and rigid corporate policies often create unnecessary stress for professionals trying to balance safety with productivity. And as the debates between work from home and work from office continue, questions are raised about what works and what doesn’t, in a way, shedding light on company policies as well. Career coach Simon Ingari’s latest X-post centres around a similar theme.

When rigid policies backfire

In the post, Simon Ingari shared the story of one such conversation between an employee and his boss that soon turned out to be a lesson in workplace irony. As per the write-up, the professional made an earnest request to his manager. Since the area he was living in was experiencing heavy rain and a flood-like situation, he requested his manager to permit him to work from home.

Instead of realising the employee’s difficulty, the manager downright denied the request. In his defence, the manager claimed that the company policy made it mandatory for every employee to report to the office location, regardless of weather conditions or personal hardship.. Without trying to prove his point, the employee simply agreed to the decision. But the tables were turned a few days later.

Employee’s witty response wins internet

After that incident, the manager approached the employee one fine day with a serious complaint. He asked the professional why he did not respond to a message sent by a client at 9 pm. To this, the employee gave a witty reply. He told his manager that, since working from home was not allowed as per the company policy cited by the manager himself, he thought that it was not the appropriate protocol to attend the client’s text message.

The post received some reactions from the internet. ‘If the employee can’t make it to work due to flooding, then that is the perfect excuse for staying home from work,’ agreed a user. Another, however, pointed out that ‘policy loses credibility the moment it is applied selectively.’ An individual raised objections to the manager’s forbidding the employee to do work from home despite a real problem.
