Jobseeker uses simple interview trick to triple callbacks, shares strategy

A jobseeker has shared a simple yet effective change in interview strategy that significantly improved his chances of getting callbacks.

According to a Reddit post, he stopped relying on long, rehearsed answers to the classic “tell me about yourself” question and instead adopted a shorter, more engaging approach.

For months, he treated the opening question like a performance. He had a polished 90-second script, carefully structured and memorised. While it sounded good in practice, it failed to create impact during real interviews.

“It sounded good in my head and probably fine out loud,” he wrote, but added that interviewers would often respond with a brief “great, thanks” and quickly move on, leaving the interaction feeling flat.

WHY LONG ANSWERS MAY NOT WORK

The turning point came after a conversation with a friend involved in hiring. She pointed out that interviewers often hear hundreds of similar introductions and tend to lose focus during long, predictable answers.

What actually captures attention, she said, is something slightly unexpected early in the conversation. This insight led him to rethink his entire approach.

THE 30-SECOND SWITCH

Instead of delivering a lengthy introduction, he cut his answer down to around 30 seconds. He focused only on his current role and added one line about what he genuinely enjoys in his work.

The key change, however, came at the end. Rather than waiting for the interviewer to lead, he asked a thoughtful question about the role or team.

He shared an example: “I read that your team recently shifted to a different structure, I’d love to hear how that’s been going from your side.”

TURNING MONOLOGUE INTO CONVERSATION

This small shift changed the entire tone of the interview. Instead of a one-sided response, it became a two-way conversation.

“Interviewers almost always visibly perk up because suddenly it’s a conversation and not a monologue,” he wrote.

The results were clear. Over two months, he received three times more second-round interview calls compared to the previous six months.

While the approach may not suit every industry, the idea is simple: keep it brief, be genuine, and engage early. In a competitive job market, small changes in communication style can make a noticeable difference.
