A techie has claimed that he was laid off along with his team, only to be asked to continue working from home for Rs 25,000 a month.
In a post shared on r/developersIndia titled, “Lost job today, now asked to handle everything alone for 25K WFH,” the techie described the situation at their workplace.
To begin with, the techie said that his employer informed a team of around 20 people on March 31 that the company could no longer sustain them due to lack of projects. They were told to treat it as their last working day, with the employer also indicating that full salaries might not be paid for the month.
However, the techie said that he was later approached individually and offered a work-from-home role at Rs 25,000, which is slightly higher than his previous Rs 23,000 salary. But the offer came with significantly expanded responsibilities, including handling full-stack and mobile development work alone if projects came in.
“I told him that would be too much workload for Rs 25,000,” he said, adding that he eventually agreed to the arrangement for now, citing a tough job market and his limited experience of eight months as a full-stack developer. No revised offer letter has been provided yet.
The techie sought advice on the next steps, prompting several responses from other users.
One of the users cautioned against relying on verbal assurances, explaining that without written communication, promises of a future pay hike may not hold value. The user also suggested continuing in the role for now while searching for other opportunities.
Another advised him to treat the offer as temporary support and begin preparing for interviews, while some pointed to broader challenges in tier-2 city job markets, with one suggesting relocating to Bengaluru for better prospects.
Others were more critical of the offer, urging the techie not to accept such terms and instead focus on freelance work or alternative opportunities.
