The video game industry has long been seen as a dream destination for creatives and engineers. But that image is starting to crack. A new survey shows nearly half of developers are now considering leaving the field, highlighting a growing sense of uncertainty about where the industry is headed.
According to research by recruitment firm skillsearch, around 44% of gaming professionals are considering stepping away from the industry. The findings reflect a workforce shaken by years of layoffs, studio closures and increasing uncertainty about long term job stability.
The scale of the problem is hard to ignore. Since 2022, the industry has shed more than 30,000 jobs worldwide, as studios tightened budgets and scaled back after the pandemic boom.
The impact has been hard to ignore. Even developers working on well performing games say they no longer feel secure in their roles. The survey, which included over 1,000 professionals from Europe, North America and Asia, reflects that unease. Around 22 percent said they had personally been laid off in the past year.
Many others had watched teammates lose their jobs or seen entire teams disappear, adding to a growing sense that no position is truly safe. What is particularly striking is how widespread the impact has been. Only a minority of developers said they had not been affected by layoffs in any way. For many, the experience has changed how they view their careers.
Some are actively planning to leave gaming, while others are quietly exploring options outside the industry. The situation appears especially severe in the United Kingdom, where 76 % of developers say they are either planning or considering a career switch by the end of 2026. Analysts say this reflects a combination of studio closures, reduced funding and fewer new projects being approved.
Artificial intelligence is also adding to the anxiety. While AI tools are becoming more common in game development, many workers worry about what that means for their roles. Some fear automation could replace certain jobs, while others question how it might affect creativity and ownership in the industry.
Even among those still working in gaming, confidence has taken a hit. Fewer than half of
those who were laid off have managed to land new roles, and many of those who did say they don’t feel particularly secure. It is that lingering uncertainty that is pushing more developers to think about leaving on their own terms, rather than waiting for the next round of cuts.
The gaming industry is no stranger to ups and downs, but the current wave of layoffs feels different. It is not just about companies cutting costs. It is about a growing loss of trust among the people who make the games. If that trend continues, the long term impact could be significant.
